33-Foot Extended-Top Rib-Side Coke Hoppers Coke is used in the manufacture of steel. The industrial production of coke from bituminous coal is called coking. Pulverized coal is "purified" by baking it at temperatures approaching 2,000 F in airless kilns. After baking, the red-hot material is moved to quench towers where it is showered with water to prevent it from igniting. From there, extended-top hoppers carry the finished coke to various crushing and screening facilities before being distributed to steel mill blast furnaces. All coke hoppers feature custom coke loads from Hay Brothers. All cars are equipped with pre-weathered Full Throttle Bettendorf trucks, metal wheels and knuckle couplers, plus extra weight for improved tracking. Click the product thumbnail for a larger image.
